Heart conditions we help with

FCCI cardiologists diagnose and treat heart disease, from chest pain and blocked arteries to valve and rhythm problems. Call 904.644.0092 to start in Orange Park.

Chest pain and coronary artery disease

Coronary artery disease (CAD) happens when the arteries that feed your heart narrow or get blocked. It can cause chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, or tiredness with activity. Some people have no symptoms at all.

Dr. Al-Saghir's FCCI profile notes he helps patients manage chest pain and structural heart disease. Care often starts with tests like a stress test or echocardiogram, then medicine and lifestyle changes. Some patients need a heart catheterization, where a doctor looks at the arteries from the inside. If you have chest pain, pressure, sudden shortness of breath, fainting, or signs of a stroke like face drooping, arm weakness or trouble speaking, call 911 right away. Do not drive yourself and do not wait for an appointment.

Valve and structural heart disease

Heart valves work like doors that keep blood moving the right way. When a valve gets stiff or leaky, the heart has to work harder. Signs can include shortness of breath, swelling, tiredness or a heart murmur your doctor hears.

FCCI's history notes that Dr. Al-Saghir was the first to perform TAVR (a catheter-based aortic valve replacement) in Clay County, and in 2016 the first in Clay County to perform the MitraClip procedure for mitral regurgitation. An echocardiogram is usually the first test to check your valves.

Heart rhythm problems

A heartbeat that races, flutters, skips or feels slow can be a rhythm problem, also called an arrhythmia. Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is a common one. FCCI has board-certified electrophysiology services, a specialty focused on heart rhythm disorders.

Your cardiologist may start with an EKG or a heart monitor. If you need a rhythm specialist, the Orange Park team can connect you with FCCI's electrophysiology team.

Some rhythm problems are harmless and some need treatment to lower stroke risk. Keep notes on when your heartbeat feels off: what you were doing, how long it lasted and how you felt. Those notes help your provider a lot. If a fast heartbeat comes with chest pain, fainting or trouble breathing, call 911.

Prevention and risk factors

High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking and family history all raise your risk of heart disease. FCCI treats and manages these risks to help prevent problems down the road.

  • Blood pressure and cholesterol management
  • Help planning heart-healthy eating and activity
  • Support to quit smoking
  • Regular follow-up so changes get caught early

Small changes add up. Walking most days, cooking more at home, cutting back on salt and getting good sleep all help your heart. Your provider will help you set goals that fit your life, not a perfect one. Questions about any of this? Call 904.644.0092 and talk with a real person at the Orange Park front desk, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
