Varicose Veins and Leg Swelling: When to Get Checked

Achy, swollen legs are not something you just have to live with.

Legs with bulging varicose veins

Bulging veins, aching or heavy legs, and swollen ankles can be signs of chronic venous insufficiency, a condition where leg veins do not move blood back to the heart well. It is common and treatable. FCCI offers a free vein screening, a quick leg ultrasound that takes about 20 minutes. Sudden swelling in one leg with pain can be a blood clot and needs prompt care.

How common is vein disease?

According to FCCI's Vein Clinic, 50% of women and 40% of men have a venous problem. FCCI also notes that chronic venous insufficiency is not just another name for varicose veins. It can be linked to family history, hormones, injury and past blood clots, and if left untreated it can lead to swelling, skin infections and blood clots.

Signs to watch for

  • Twisted, bulging veins
  • Aching, heavy or tired legs, especially at the end of the day
  • Swelling in the ankles or lower legs
  • Skin changes, darkening or itching near the ankles
  • Sores that are slow to heal

When swelling is urgent

Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, is a blood clot in a deep vein, usually in the leg. FCCI notes it can lead to a dangerous clot in the lungs if the clot breaks loose. Get urgent care for sudden swelling in one leg with pain, warmth or redness. If you have chest pain, pressure, sudden shortness of breath, fainting, or signs of a stroke like face drooping, arm weakness or trouble speaking, call 911 right away. Do not drive yourself and do not wait for an appointment.

How veins are checked

FCCI's accredited vascular lab uses ultrasound to look at your veins. A venous duplex checks for clots and takes about 30 minutes. A venous insufficiency exam checks whether the valves inside your veins are working by looking at which way blood flows.

The free vein screening is a shorter ultrasound of the leg, about 20 minutes, to check vein function and look for blockages. Call to ask where screenings are offered.

Why a heart practice for veins

FCCI's Vein Clinic says it is the only vein clinic in Northeast Florida with a team of board-certified endovascular and vascular physicians, plus cardiovascular, sleep, wound care and pulmonary specialists. That matters because leg swelling is not always about veins. It can also come from the heart, kidneys, medicines or sleep apnea. If your symptoms turn out to be something else, the team can keep looking without sending you somewhere new.

Simple things that help

  • Walk often to keep blood moving
  • Put your feet up when you rest
  • Avoid sitting or standing still for long stretches
  • Ask your provider whether compression stockings make sense for you
